Congrés UICN septembre 2021
Mar 15 Juin 2021 - 16:18

ONE NATURE, ONE FUTURE
Investing in nature – key to sustainability and recovery
The critical role of the private sector in generating impact for nature conservation and nature-based recovery is now more evident than ever. A recent report on the State of Finance for Nature calls for closing a USD 4.1 trillion financing gap by 2050 in order to tackle the climate, biodiversity, and land degradation crises. The Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework further emphasises this investment need, requiring additional investments in nature equivalent to 0.7-1% of annual global GDP to halt biodiversity loss by 2030.
The IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseille will focus on leveraging economic and financial systems for sustainability, with 50+ related sessions, and will also host the IUCN CEO Summit. View more details on the range of opportunities for those interested in business at Congress here.
The following reflections from IUCN Members and Partners highlight the role of business and finance in nature conservation, and the importance of providing financial incentives and promoting attractive investment opportunities.

“The Congress will address seven themes, which will give us the opportunity to link up with other organisations from which we can learn, and also share our experiences, building together with IUCN” – Raquel Jimenez Acosta, Global Affairs Coordinator, Reforestamos.
“We can only make a change together through partnerships, through organisations that are part of the IUCN network. We really need to show that there’s still hope and that there are still projects that can make a change” – Joel Boele, Community Outreach Coordinator, Black Jaguar Foundation.
Beyond business-as-usual: resetting companies’ relationship with nature
By Nadine McCormick – Manager, Nature Action, World Business Council for Sustainable Development
Businesses and business leaders have become more aware of the impacts of the private sector on sustainability, and the opportunity to join the action on nature-based recovery. This is a critical year for all sectors to become involved in order to work towards an equitable, net zero, nature-positive economy. Read more.
An alliance with ranchers for sustainable production in the native grasslands of southern Brazil
By Pedro F. Develey – Executive Director for BirdLife/SAVE Brasil
Brazil’s Pampa biome is extremely biodiverse, with much of the land privately owned and operated for production. The Grasslands Alliance formed between BirdLife International and SAVE Brasil has adopted the concept of ‘conserving by producing’, by offering financial incentives and management tools to local ranchers for the conservation of the grasslands. Read more.
Finance for nature – creating attractive investment opportunities
By Martin Stadelmann – Director of Funds and Platforms, South Pole
In order to drive effective investment in nature and address the biodiversity-finance gap, private investors need to be connected to conservation projects delivering impact. Using nature-based solutions and making links between conservation and climate change mitigation is also necessary for investors interested in climate finance. Read more.
Promising solutions for scaling private investment in nature
By Edit Kiss – Investment and Development Director, Mirova
Natural capital investments and nature-positive activities are critical in the years to come. The Nature+ Accelerator Fund, launched by the Coalition for Private Investment in Conservation (CPIC) and IUCN in collaboration with Mirova and the GEF, supports high-impact investment projects. The fund aims to scale up nature projects focussing on carbon sequestration, nature-based solutions, new technologies, and other biodiversity and conservation areas. Read more.
